In 2019, Nisha became the only Malaysian on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) 100 Women of 2019 list. She was recognised by BBC for her work in assisting the local transgender community.
Nisha Ayub received the Human Rights Watch’s Alison Desforges Prize in recognition of Extraordinary Activism during 2015, for her courageous protest against Malaysian law that was harmful to the right of the people to live peacefully without fear of being hurt or persecuted. She was also awarded the International Women of Courage Award in 2016, making her the first transgender person to be awarded this award.

Nisha Ayub (born on April 5th 1979) is an activist from Malaysia. Malaysian Transgender Rights activist. Ayub is co-founder of the community-based SEED Foundation and transgender grassroots campaign Justice for Sisters and she received the highly coveted International Women of Courage Award in 2016.
Being transgender, Nisha was a target for police in areas who enforce Islamic Sharia laws are enforced. In a specific provision in Sharia (Islamic legislation) men are not allowed to dress or act as a woman in public with a woman’s appearance. Infractions to this rule can be punished with a fine of 1000 rings (approximately $257 dollars) and imprisonment for a period of up to six months. Sharia Law is enforced through state Islamic religious authorities. According to the law Ayub got imprisoned in the year 2000. When Nisha was in a male-only prison, the warden and others sexually attacked her. Ayub told of her experience in cell: “They asked me to strip naked in front of everyone. They made fun of me, because my body doesn’t conform to what men and women are supposed to be.”
In 2018, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture of University Putra Malaysia, Leena Wong alongside lead study author Patrick Krug from California State University, Los Angeles, discovered a new species of sea slug that camouflages itself as seaweed, and upon confirmation that it was indeed a new species, named it Sacoproteus nishae after Nisha. The sea slug was named so due to its ability to camouflage itself after seaweed calling “it the best example of an animal masquerading as a plant”.
