Ning Ying is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on October 23, 1959 in Beijing, China. Ning Ying (born 1959 in Beijing) is a female Chinese film director who is frequently regarded to be part the Chinese’s “Sixth Generation” filmmaker coterie The group comprises Jia Zhangke Zhang Yuan and Wang Xiaoshuai. This is more due to the shared subject matter rather more than anything else, since chronologicallyspeaking, Ning has a greater kinship with the early Fifth Generation. The screenwriter’s sister, Ning Dai is often a collaborator as well as the wife of filmmaker Zhang Yuan. In 1997 she was a part of the jury of the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.

In 2003 the trilogy was presented in all its entirety by the Harvard Film Archive in an event that was billed to be “From China with Love: The Films of Ning Ying.”

Ning completed her Beijing trilogy by releasing a full-length documentary called Railroad of Hope in 2002 and followed the massive movement of cheap labor across China. The film was awarded the Grand Prix du Cinema du Reel in 2002.

One of the first classes to return to into Beijing Film Academy in 1978 (along with Fifth Generation helmers Zhang Yimou, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Chen Kaige), Ning Ying’s career diverged from her male peers after she was permitted to study abroad at Italy’s Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. While in Italy she was introduced to Italian Director Bernardo Bertolucci, whom she was to serve as assistant director in the epic film of 1987 The Last Emperor.

Together, the films offer an examination of the huge changes Beijing’s capital city has experienced in the last decades.

In 2005, she made Perpetual Motion, which premiered in several major film festivals, notably Venice and Toronto.
