She was introduced to the film industry by the renowned film director Roy de Silva and actress Sumana Amarasinghe. She appeared in the movie Hitha Honda Chandiya in a dance scene. The same time, D. B. Nihalsinghe utilized Thennakoon in his commercials for TV and later for the role of “Amaravathi” in the play Dimithu Muthu and finally in the 1991’s in the movie Keli Madala. Her most notable television appearance was in Passe Gena Manamali directed by Nalan Mendis. She was in the famous TV program Doo Daruwo which was telecast several times on Rupavahini each Sunday, between 8.30 and 8.30 p.m. Her role as ‘”Deepthi” in the TV serial Doo Daruwo became the most significant success of her career.
She was married to popular singer Madhumadhawa Aravinda, and they have one daughter Swetha Mandakini. She met Madhumadhawa Aravinda during the teledrama Pini Bindu in 1992. They got married on May 5 in 1996. They divorced in early 2000s.
She faced a horrible car accident in 2007 .The injured actress who sustained grievous bodily injuries from the accident. She was rushed to the Ragama hospital’s ICU due to the serious nature. The accident occurred at Balummahara on March 14 when she was rushing to Kurunegala from Colombo for a Television filming event. Her car was reduced to matchwood although the chauffeur miraculously escaped with minor injuries.
Her first experience in cinema was in the film of 1985 Mawubima Naththam Mawubima, which was directed by Louie Vanderstraeten , with only a small part. Her first significant part in cinema was in 1990’s movie Yukthiyata Wada directed by Sunil Soma Peiris. Her most popular films include Keli Madala, Nagaran and Le Kiri Kandulu.

Thennakoon Pathiranalage Nilmini (born on January 23, 1965 (born as nilminni Tennkoon) (also known as Sinhala) often referred to called Nilmini Thennakoon has been a prominent actress for Sri Lankan cinema and television. An extremely versatile actress who is engaged in television and film, she has been the recipient of the Best Actress award multiple times in various award ceremonies locally. The actress is frequently described as”the “tear drop” in Sinhala Teledrama. She has been known to take many roles and be a popular figure across Sri Lanka.
In the 1980s, she started acting on stage in her school at the age of the seventh grade and was studying dance under Madame. Vajira Chitrasena. After that, she was a student at “Low Country” and Kandyan dancing with a radio artist Miss. Chitra Kumari Kalubowila at Moratuwa. Under Chithra’s supervision she danced in the ballet Sasara performed in Rupavahini.
In 1992, she won the Sarasaviya award for the Best Upcoming actress for her role in Suranimala. She won the Sarasaviya Award for the Best Actress for the role “Veena” in the film Le Kiri Kandulu. In 2016, she won the Sumathi award for the Best Actress for the title role in Amma.
