Nicholas Berry, born 16 April 1963, is an English actor. His roles in EastEnders (1985-1990) and in 2012 (one-off appearance), and in Heartbeat (1992-1998) as PC Nick Rowan are his most well-known. He was the UK’s number one singer with “Every Loser Wins”, which reached number one in 1986. Also, the theme song to Heartbeat, a cover by Buddy Holly’s “Heartbeat”, reached number one in 1992.

Berry was married to actress Rachel Robertson on April 24, 1994. The couple has two sons, Louis (born 1995), and Finley (born 1998). They live in Epping, Essex.

Berry returned to EastEnders after his musical career stalled but left again in an ‘open to return’ storyline which was aired in December 1990. His character has only made one brief re-appearance since in an episode dated 13 January 2012, marking the funeral of his on-screen mother, played by Pam St. Clement.

Berry was cast as PC (later Sgt. Nick Rowan) in 1992’s ITV drama series Heartbeat (1992-1998). Berry recorded “Heartbeat”, the title track, in 1992. It was a cover of the Buddy Holly song from 1959. Berry began acting when he was eight years old. He attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, London, where he performed minor roles on TV, film and stage. His big break was when he played Simon Wicksy Wicks in BBC’s popular soap opera EastEnders. He joined the series in 1985, shortly after it’s inception, and stayed until 1990. Berry’s character was created overnight and was originally scheduled to be shown later. He was however introduced to correct the cast imbalance that had been created by David Scarboro’s unexpected departure as Mark Fowler’s actor. Many of Scarboro’s roles as the senior character of the cast had to be filled by someone else. Thus Wicksy was introduced sooner than expected and Berry was cast quickly. He quickly became EastEnders’ most popular pin-up, and was surrounded by female admirers during his time.

Berry took a break in EastEnders and went on tour to record an album, from which the number one single “Every Loser Wins,” was recorded in 1986. The song featured heavily in EastEnders’ plotline, The Banned. In it, the youths from Albert Square formed a band and performed the songs live on screen. It was the second-biggest-selling single in the UK that year, remaining at number one for three weeks. Each of its composers, Stewart James, Bradley James, and Simon May received an Ivor Novello award. The self-titled album from which “Every Loser wins” is taken has never been made available in CD format.

In 1998, Berry left Heartbeat for the BBC 1 written, produced, and directed series Harbour Lights. Shot around the area of Bridport he played a harbourmaster. Less successful than his two previous character-based programmes, it ran for two series. Berry returned to Heartbeat for a one-off twin episode special in 2002, the episodes based on his character’s new career as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer.
