Nick Awde is one of the most popular and richest Singer-Songwriter who was born on December 29, 1961 in London, England, United Kingdom. Nick Awde Hill was born 29 December 1961 in London, England. He is a British writer and artist. He has his headquarters in London and Brussels.
His first novel, The Virgin Killers was published in 2003 by The Public School Chronicles. The novel is about the murder of priests at a Catholic prepschool in the wilds, Lancashire. It leads to a trail that includes conspiracies by Jesuits and Freemasons deep within Britain’s Establishment.
In 2007 two other plays followed, premiering at the Edinburgh Festival. Written with Chris Bartlett, directed by David Giles and starring Jessica Martin and Jason Wood, Unnatural Acts is a comedy about two flatmates, a gay man and a straight woman, who try to have a baby together. Written by Awde and directed by Jon Bonfiglio, Blood Confession is a violent drama about an interrogation, about a child murder from 25 years ago, that goes horribly wrong.
November 2008 saw the first MelloFest take place at the Fiddler’s Elbow in Kentish Town, London. Organised by Awde, MelloFest One featured two Mellotrons onstage along with discussions and live Mellotron-inspired music from guests, plus the official launch of Awde’s book Mellotron. Talking about their music and in some cases also playing it were: David Cross (King Crimson), Nick Magnus (Steve Hackett Band), Martin Orford (IQ), Jakko Jakszyk (21st Century Schizoid Band/Tangent/Level 42), Dave Cousins (Strawbs) & Robert Kirby (Strawbs/Nick Drake/Paul Weller), Robert Webb (England) and Tony Clarke, producer of the Moody Blues.
Awde composed, produced and directed Andrew Lloyd Webber The Musical in 1993. It was described by The Virgin Encyclopedia of Stage & Film Musicals as “a bizarre mixture of spoofs and satire”. It is a pastiche of Lloyd Webber’s life, and pays homage to Mel Brooks’ The Producers. The musical ran in various fringe venues in London, with many casts. Awde’s 1994 sequel Margaret Thatcher: The Musical was not supported. Eros and the Skull (Bloomsbury Theatre in London, 1988), a one-man show about French poet Baudelaire – and Semtex & Lipstick, King’s Head Theatre in London, 1992), are Awde’s other stage plays. These dramas for actors and actresses deal with love and political torture. He co-designed the costumes for the historical drama Tewodros, Arts Theatre 1987.

Hill’s rock band Desert Hearts started out as a three-piece rock band that also played under Dr Wu’s name in 1990. It then evolved into a four-piece with Awde singing, playing guitar, vocals and guitars, Andy Matthews on bass, vocals and guitars, Leo Katana playing guitars and a string drummer. Awde dropped the Dr Wu label and went into the studio to record sessions with Andy Ward in 1993. Awde performed vocals and all other instruments, including guitars, keyboards, and violin. 1996’s I Saw Satan On the Northern Line, also known as Love Songs from the Underground, was released as a “CD without music”. It is a booklet-style CD that contains lyrics and often humorous observations about modern life. In 2010, the band emerged from hibernation with Close to the Edge/W Rocket Man/Meryl Sterep, a mini-album that features Mellotron keyboard arrangements.
Since the 1990s, he has been a theatre critic and has written for The Stage newspaper most of his career. Together with Gerald Berkowitz, in 1999 he set up theatreguidelondon.co.uk. He was a part of a crucial period in the fight for black empowerment in Britain, and he worked on The Voice. His headlines were often of immediate impact. One example is when he contributed to a riot at Brixton the next day and tried to take over the local police station.
With Chris Bartlett he co-wrote the comedy drama Pete and Dud: Come Again, a hit at the Assembly Rooms at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2005 before transferring to London’s West End at The Venue, in March 2006, then doing a 90-date tour of the UK the following year. The play examines the comic relationship that existed between comedians Peter Cook and Dudley Moore of Beyond the Fringe; set in a chat show during the early eighties, the play tells their tale from the perspective of Dudley Moore, by then an international film star.
