Nichola Goddard Biography

Nichola Goddard is one of the most popular and richest Soldier who was born on May 2, 1980 in Madang, Papua New Guinea. Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah, MSM (May 2, 1981 – May 17, 2006.) was the first Canadian female combat soldier to be killed in combat and the 16th Canadian soldier to die in Canadian operations in Afghanistan.

Captain Goddard arrived to Afghanistan in January 2006. She was serving as a forward observer with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry at the time of her death. Her parent unit was the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. She was “respected as a strong and secure commander, whose troops were very loyal.”

Goddard was shot and killed in a Panjwaye District firefight on May 17, 2006. This was part of a two-day joint operation by Afghan and Canadian troops to secure Kandahar’s outskirts following rumors of Taliban preparations for an attack on the city. As the troops moved into a mosque to capture 15 suspected Taliban members, dozens of hidden militants started firing from nearby houses. Goddard, a crew commander was half-exposed in her LAV III when she was hit by two rocket propelled grenades. The battle lasted for most of the 17th day and into the evening, and was ended shortly after an American B-1 Lancer dropped 500lbs bomb. The two-day operation ended with Goddard, an Afghan National Army soldier and 40 Taliban being killed. There were also approximately 20 Taliban that were captured. Early reports incorrectly believed this to have included Mullah Fatherullah.
