Cumart is the chairman of the literary society Neue Gesellschaft fur Literatur Erlangen (NGL) and a member P.E.N.Zentrum Deutschland as well as the Rotary club Bamberg -Domreiter. Cumart is a member of the Verband Deutscher Schriftsteller (VS) German writers society. He also serves on the Academic Advisory Board for the Georges – anawati Grant foundation, which promotes interreligious dialogue.

Cumart, who has been the head of the literature section at Bamberg’s magazine “Frankische Nacht”, since 1992, is now a freelance journalist for the culture sections of German daily papers Frankischer Tag or Nurnberger Nachrichten. He gives talks and leads seminars on topics like Turkey, Islam, and migration in Germany. Many of his papers and readings have taken him to other countries (e.g. England, Ireland, Turkey, Switzerland, Poland).
