His early education was at the Suhum Presbyterian Primary school in 1958. He continued his education at Anumle Primary School, Achimota, and Akropong demontration Primary School, from 1960 to 1962 and 1962 to 1964 respectively. He was then admitted to the Aburi Presbyterian Boys Middle School, where he received his Middle School Certificate. He was awarded his Ordinary Level Certificate (‘O’-Level) at the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School in 1966. He also enrolled at Accra Workers’ College that year to rewrite his ‘O’ Level Mathematics, Economics, and Government papers. He entered Apam Secondary School in 1972 to obtain his Advanced Level Certificate (‘A-Level’) in 1974.
Amegatcher is a member and past president of Ghana Bar Association. Amegatcher is also a member of The International Bar Association, Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the Lagos Arbitration Center. He was once the president of the association from 2012 to 2015.

Amegatcher graduated from the University of Ghana in 1978 and worked at the National Council on Women Development as a national service personnel. He completed his national service in 1978 and took up teaching at Odorgonno Secondary School until 1980. Then he joined Accra Polytechnic to teach Commercial Law, General principles of English, and Ghanaian Law. Amegatcher worked as a private lawyer at Nana Sarpong Ahenkorah and Company law from 1980 to 1989 while he was teaching. In 1989, he joined Sam Okudzeto & Associates as a partner. He then became the managing partner of the firm from 2005 to 2018. From 1988 to 2004, he was the chief examiner for Law at the West African Examination Council and Ghana Commercial Examinations. He also served as an external examiner for Law for polytechnics of Ghana. Amegatcher was secretary of Greater Accra Bar Association, 1993-1989, and assistant secretary of Ghana Bar Association, 1993-1995. From 1994 to 2003, he was the secretary of Ghana Illiteracy and Resources Foundation. He was also the assistant secretary of Ghana Bar Association. He was chair of World Vision Ghana Advisory Board from 2009 to 2012. Since 2011, he is a West African representative on the Commonwealth Lawyers Association Council. From 2012 to 2015, he was president of the Ghana Bar Association. Amegatcher has served as the president of the Ghana Bar Association from 2012 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, he was vice-chair of the African Regional Forum for International Bar Association (IBA), and from 2017 to 2018, he was the chair of African Regional Forum. He currently chairs the African Regional Hub for the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. Before he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ghana, he was a senior lecturer at Ghana School of Law. He taught Advocacy and Legal ethics, as well as other Alternative Dispute Resolution courses.
Later that year, he went to the University of Ghana to study Law and Political Science. He graduated in 1977. From 1978 to 1980, he studied at the Ghana School of Law and was admitted to the bar in November 1980. Amegatcher has a certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution, which he received in 1996 from California State University, Sacramento. In 2001, he also received a certificate from the United States Department of Commerce on Commercial Dispute Resolution. He also received a certificate from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration on Commercial Dispute Resolution (a World Bank module course). He enrolled in Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University, the United Kingdom in 2006 and graduated in 2007 with an LL.M. in Advanced Litigation & Dispute Resolution.
Amegatcher was nominated together with three other judges (Justice Agnes Dordzie, Justice Samuel Marful-Sau and Justice Nii Ashie Kotey) by the president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo in 2018. He and Justice Agnes Dodzie were subsequently vetted on 24 August 2018, and were approved by parliament on 25 September 2018. He was sworn into office together with the other three nominated judges in October 2018.
