Neil Turok is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on November 16, 1958 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Turok was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on 16th November 1958 to Mary (Butcher), and Ben Turok (Latvian-born), who were both activists in the antiapartheid movement as well as the African National Congress. Turok graduated from Churchill College in Cambridge and then went on to earn his doctorate at Imperial College in London under the guidance of David Olive, one the founders of superstring theory. He was then appointed as an associate scientist at Fermilab in Illinois, after a Santa Barbara postdoctoral position. He was awarded the Maxwell Medal of the Institute of Physics in 1992 for his contributions to theoretical Physics. He was made Professor of Physics at Princeton University in 1994. From 1997 to 1997, he held the Chair of Mathematical Physics of the University of Cambridge. In 2008, he was named Director of the Perimeter Institute.

Turok, Justin Khoury and Burt Ovrut introduced the concept of the Ekpyrotic Universe , a cosmological model where the hot big bang universe results from the collision of a brane with bulk space with a bounding plane. This occurs starting from a cold, static, vacuous universe. Turok, along with Paul Steinhardt from Princeton, has been working on a cyclic model of the universe. In this model, the big bang can be explained as the collision of two “brane worlds” in M Theory. While the model’s predictions are consistent with current cosmological data there are some interesting differences between them and the predictions for cosmological inflation. Future experiments (probably by Planck space observatory) will probe these differences. Steinhardt, Turok, and others showed that the cyclic model could be used to relax the cosmological constant to small values. This was consistent with the current observations. The popular science book Endless Universe was co-authored by Turok and Steinhardt in 2007. The Universe Within: From Quantum to Cosmos was published in 2012 by Turok’s Massey Lectures.

He was awarded the 2008 TED Prize for his work in mathematical physics and in establishing the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg. He also received a “Most Innovative People Award,” for Social Innovation, at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (WSIE) in 2008.

In 2010 Turok received a prize from the World Innovation Summit for Education in Qatar and an award from the South African Mathematical Society. In 2011 Turok received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Ottawa.

Turok established the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Muizenberg) in 2003. This postgraduate educational center supports the development of science and mathematics across Africa.

Neil Turok is one of the richest Physicist from South Africa. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Neil Turok 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Neil Geoffrey Turok, OC was born 16 November 1958 and is a South African physicist. From 2008 to 2019, he was the director at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is a specialist in mathematical physics as well as early-universe Physics, including the cosmological constants and a cyclic model of the universe.

Turok’s work has been in many areas of mathematics and early universe Physics. His focus is on observational tests for fundamental physics in Cosmology. His group demonstrated how temperature anisotropies and polarisation of cosmic background radiation were correlated in the early 1990s. This prediction was confirmed by WMAP spacecraft precision measurements. A key test to determine if there is a cosmological constant was also developed by the group, which was also confirmed recently.

On May 9, 2008, Mike Lazaridis announced that Turok would become the new Executive Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics starting on October 1, 2008.
