Swarbrick was criticised for his performance in a match between Sheffield Wednesday (24 February 2018) and Aston Villa (24 February 2018). He gave 16 fouls to the away team and one to the home team, which was criticized as unfair. Swarbrick declined a penalty appeal for Wednesday. Villa defender John Terry seemed to get away with what appeared to be a red card offense for a foul on striker Atdhe NUHIU, and he gave Villa a questionable late penalty. Roger Dilkes, a former Premier League referee, defended his performance.
Swarbrick resigned from refereeing after the 2017/18 season, but will continue to work as the Premier League’s Video Assistant Referee (VAR). He is the Head of Implementation VAR in Premier League. He also assists in training Select Group 1 and Select Group 2 referees in VAR use when it is introduced in 2019/20 season.
