Neil Conti moved to France in 2001 and opened a recording studio near Montpellier. He produces artists. He is still an active drummer and regularly travels to London to perform or to provide drum tracks via the internet from his French studio. He and Jeff Fernandez, the recording engineer, manage Minimoon.

Raye Cosbert and Neil Conti, who later became promoters of Massive Attack and managers of Amy Winehouse, founded “Backstage” in 1989. This bi-weekly music group allows artists to jam and meet. Neil was motivated by the closing of Speakeasy Club, a popular place for musicians from London to meet up. The Borderline, Charing Cross Road was the club’s home. Later, the Jazz Cafe in Camden became the club’s permanent location. Many imitations of the club were created in Soho. It became a hub of talent and A+R men and launched the careers of Ronnie Jordan and Seal Jones. Levi’s sponsored a live CD and featured the club in a MTV documentary. Neil ended the club in 1992 because of time constraints and conflicts during his session work.

Neil Conti was raised by musically-oriented parents and was encouraged to study classical piano. However, he discovered another musical inspiration when he saw his cousin Morgan Fisher play keyboards for Mott the Hoople in 1970. He was twelve years old when he began playing the drums. After being inspired by Mott’s drummer, Dale Griffin (now a musician), he gained experience in a variety of local bands and developed an interest in soul and jazz music. After earning a diploma as a graphic designer, he moved to London where he learned a variety of musical styles, including reggae and calypso. He was a drummer in several early bands, including Tropicana Steel Band and Kokomo, as well as numerous recording sessions with artists like Pauline Black.

He joined Prefab Sprout in late 1983 after seeing the band on Richard Skinner’s show. After hearing them play, he called Kitchenware Records to offer his services. He was an integral part of the band and recorded numerous platinum, silver and gold albums. He also toured Europe and the UK. He was a prefab Sprout member and a session musician. He played on many of the well- known artists’ records, including the David Bowie singles, “Dancing in the Street”, and “Absolute Beginners” as well as in Bowie’s band for the 1985 Live Aid set. He left Prefab Sprout due to band inactivity in 1993, while continuing to tour and record as a sessions musician.
