Edmund Overend (born 20 Aug 1955) is an American professional cross-country mountain biking racer. He is a six time NORBA cross country mountain bike national champion and was the first ever cross-country world champion when he won the UCI Mountain Bike World Championship. Overend was inducted in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame, respectively, in 1990.
He was also featured in a video about mountain-bike racing entitled “Battle At Durango” which was filmed in Durango, Colorado, in 1990. It was released by New & Unique Videos 1991.
Overend was featured in the “world’s first mountain biking video,” appropriately titled, The Great Mountain Biking Video, which was released by New & Unique Videos San Diego in 1988. Overend is also featured in competition sequences for “The Sun Valley Mountain Bike Challenge,” a video chronicling the 1988 NORBA Championships.

Overend, the son of a U.S. diplomat and was born in Taipei (Taiwan) and raised in Iran and Ethiopia. Overend attended San Diego High School and was involved with motocross racing. Overend relocated to Durango, Colorado, in the 1980s. There he entered Durango’s Iron Horse Classic, which is a 47-mile race that features 6,700 feet of climbing on narrow gauge railroads. He eventually switched to mountain biking after his road racing experience and his road racing fitness made him a formidable competitor.
Overend was recruited to race for Schwinn’s factory racing team in 1984. He won two consecutive NORBA Mountain Biking National Championships in 1986 and 1987. After signing a contract to race Specialized Bicycles, Overend won the NORBA Mountain Biking National Championships in 1989, 1990 and 1991, as well as 1992. Overend, 40, attempted to qualify for the United States Olympic Team to participate in the first Olympic Cross-Country Mountain Biking Competition at the 1996 Olympic Games. To qualify for the Olympic team, Overend needed to finish in fourth place in the qualifier race. However, overend suffered a flat tire about a mile from the finish and ended up in eighth.
Even though he retired from professional mountain bike competition in 1996, he continued competing in endurance competitions, winning the XTERRA Triathlon in 1998 and 1999 and competing in regular road triathlons. He won the U.S. National Winter Triathlon Championship in 2000 and the UCI Masters Cyclo-cross World Championship in 2012. In 2015, Overend won the first-ever U.S. Fat Bike championship. During his professional mountain biking career, Overend earned the nicknames “Deadly Nedly” and “The Lung”, because he was very difficult to beat and for his exceptional aerobic endurance at altitude (especially so for a man of his age), respectively. He is the current captain of the Specialized Cross Country Team.
