That same year, Afshin-Jam signed an open letter of apology posted to Iranian.com along with 266 other Iranian academics, writers, artists, and journalists about the persecution of Bahá’ís. That same year she chaired the first annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. In 2012, she advocated for the closure of the Canadian embassy in Tehran.
Afshin Jam was against the death penalty being applied 18-year-old Iranian girl Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi. She was sentenced to death for stabbing one three men who attempted to rape her in Karaj in March 2005. A campaign was started to save the life and liberty of this minor, which included a petition that attracted over 350,000 signatures around the world. She also dedicated her song Someday (one of twelve tracks on her album Someday), to Nazanin Fatehi. In June 2006, Nazanin Fatehi received a new trial after pressure from the international community. Nazanin Fatehi, who was acquitted of murder, was released by Afshin Jam after she raised $43,000 online for bail. Her lawyers continued to work on her case. Afshin Jam was honored by Artists for Human Rights and Youth For Human Rights International for her efforts to save Nazanin Fatehi. HarperCollins published The Tale of Two Nazanins, by Susan McClelland and Afshin-Jam, which chronicles the lives of two Iranian Nazanins who were involved in Fatehi’s trial.
