Jamali was the daughter of a French mother, and a Pakistani dad. They met while attending graduate school in New York. Later, they opened a bookstore in Dobbs Ferry, New York called Books & Research, Inc., specializing in obtaining books and documents from the pre-Internet age. They began working with the FBI in 1988. The FBI was interested in Soviet intelligence agents (and later Russians) who came to the store looking for hard-to-find documents from the U.S. government.
Jamali graduated (1999) from New York University with a degree as a Political Science and Government major. He reached out to FBI to offer his services after 9/11. His parents were about to retire. Oleg Kulikov, a Russian GRU member, attempted to recruit him. He became a double agent. Kulikov paid Jamali to obtain what he believed were classified documents, and the ruse continued from 2005 to 2009. Jamali was “arrested” in front Kulikov by the FBI, blowing Kulikov’s cover as a diplomat from the United States.
In 2019, Naveed joined Newsweek; first as a columnist, then as an editor-at- large. He has reported extensively on matters of National Security and Intelligence , and was part of the team that broke the Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi raid.[1]
