Natasha Boas is one of the most popular and richest Curator who was born on November 20, 1964 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Boas studied art history at Vassar College between 1982 and 1984. She graduated in 1986 with a BA degree in comparative literature from University of California, Berkeley. In 1989, she received her MA and Ph.D from Yale in continental philosophy theory. Her research was focused on the modernist avantgarde in literature and art history. Denis Hollier, editor at October, published her dissertation “Sublime Configurations. Breton. Bataille. And the Surreal”. She also founded Basement 27, an underground artist space while at Yale.

Boas organized the 2013 San Francisco Art Institute’s Energy is All Around exhibition. It was the first survey to look at the Mission School as an historical reality. The exhibit featured 130 paintings, drawings, and sculptures that date back to 1990 through 2013. The New York Times reviewed the exhibit and wrote that it “bristles infectiously in youthful urgency”. The Huffington Post said: “If anyone ever wanted to see how an entire movement could be inspired, evolved, this show should not be missed.” In late 2013, the show opened at San Francisco Art Institute. Energy Is All Around, a show that was first exhibited at the Grey Gallery of New York University in April 2014, was also shown at the Grey Gallery.

Boas was part of the founding faculty of the California College of the Arts’ Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice from 2004 to 2008. She was a thesis advisor and also developed thesis exhibition classes, program content, commissions, and catalogs. She wrote about art and trend-spotting during 2005-2009 for Conde Nast’s Domino style magazine. She contributed to The Believer as well as The Huffington Post. She also authored the Facebook Artist In Residence book in 2017 on the history of Art and Tech within the Bay Area, marking the 5th anniversary Facebook’s artist-in-residence program.

Boas started her career as the Galerie Montenay gallery director in Paris in 1990. She was the visual arts curator at The American Center in New York and Paris from 1992 to 1993. She coordinated several exhibitions while at The American Center, including Off the Shelf/Off the Wall – The Artist’s Book After 1960 (1996); Micromegas with Jon Kessler (1995); Leon Golub and Nancy Spero, War and Memory (1995); Stations By Bill Viola (1995); and Nam June Paik and David and Marat (1994). After leaving the American Center she was a curator at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Busan International Arts Festival, Busan, Korea. Boas was named public programs curator at Yerba buena Center of the Arts in 1996. She built new programs for adults, such as panels, symposia and artist conversations. She curated several exhibits at New Langton Arts and the Contemporary Jewish Museum between 2001 and 2010. Boas was also the acting director and curator of the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art from 2007 to 2012. She curated shows on Sister Corita Kent and Clare Rojas and Harrell Fletcher. She was the chief curator and executive director of the Sonoma County Museum from 2001 to 2004. There she curated the exhibit James Turrell: Light and Land. She was chosen to organize and curate the opening exhibit of Galerie Maeght’s San Francisco exhibition in November 2014.

Boas’s interest in the Mission School was heightened while she was at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The museum exhibited many of the artists associated to the movement in the 1997 exhibition Bay Area Now: a Regional Survey of Contemporary Art. The artists were responding to the gentrification in the Mission District during the dot-com boom. They embraced street aesthetics as well as lowbrow visual culture. They were known for their graffiti creations and promotion. All had tagging names. They were able to move easily between abstraction and representation, street and studio. They also worked in various media, including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Each artist had a unique style and philosophy but they were all drawn to the radical, the political. All of them were influenced by the Beats, Funk art and Punk, which is not surprising. Boas was a keen observer of the work of artists who would become members of Mission School’s 2002 roster. Boas contributed an essay, “A Partially and Incomplete Oral History Of the Mission School”, to the catalogue for Barry McGee’s exhibit at Berkeley Art Museum. Her essay was also included within the accompanying book. The Mission School was deemed “the most important art movement that emerged out of San Francisco in late 20th century” by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Natasha Boas is a French-American contemporary art curator, writer, and critic. She has taught art history and curatorial studies at Yale, Stanford, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her exhibition on the forgotten Modernist Algerian artist, Baya Mahieddine “Baya: Woman of Algiers” 2018 at the Grey Art Gallery NYU garnered important international critical attention. In 2017 she was featured in Lynn Hershman Leeson’s “Vertighost” playing the role of herself, an art historian. She also authored the Facebook Artist in Residence book on the recent history of Art and Tech in the Bay Area for the 5th anniversary of Facebook’s artist in residency program.
