Sandtorv was born on the Norwegian island of Alesund. She studied electronic, jazz, and improvisational music at the Norwegian Academy of Music (Oslo) and Griegakademiet (Bergen). Her exploration of different expressions in improvisational music, both solo and with diverse ensembles, is what makes her famous. Sandtorv and John Hegre, a noise artist, founded the band Polygon Junx at Bergen 2011. Thore Warland, drummer from Staer. Their influences include jazz, contemporary music and rock, and they create an unpredictably unique sound. They played in Geneva (Switzerland), Landmark and Playdate in Bergen, Norway, Heck (Trondheim Norway), and Blowout in Oslo (Oslo Norway). The same year, they also performed at Det Norske Studentersamfunn Oslo with Marte Eberson & Kjetil Moster.

She toured with Morning Has Occurred with Karl Seglem in 2013. In addition, she performed on tour with Ole Mofjell, her boyfriend (drummer of Morning Has Occurred), performing three concerts in Krakow, Berlin and concerts in Norway. A solo project for voice & electronics was also presented at Festspillene i Bergen. She also presented a children’s concert. She performed as a trio at the 2013 Julejazz in Alesund with brothers Christian Skar Winther, and Andreas Skar Winther.

Sandtorv bring the experimental concept of improvised meetings between innovative vocal artists and guitarists to a new extreme with the duo album The Jist with the inventive guitarist Torgeir Standal. They are keeping up the tradition of the master vocal artist Sidsel Endresen and highly inventive guitarist Stian Westerhus, but also inspired by the more experimental music of Maja Ratkje. In 2015 she released her first solo album Pieces Of Solitude.
