Nassif Ghoussoub Biography

Nassif Ghoussoub is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on November 9, 1953 in Ségou, Ségou Region, Mali. In 1975, he completed his doctorat 3eme (PhD), and in 1979, he received a Doctorat d’Etat at Pierre and Marie Curie University. His advisors were Gustave Chquet and Antoine Brunel.

Ghoussoub was elected as a representative of faculty on the University of British Columbia Board of Governors in 2018. He will continue his service until February 29, 2020. Ghoussoub previously served in this position for two terms consecutively from 2008 to 2014.

From 1994 to 1996, he was vice-president of the Canadian Mathematical Society. He also served as the founding director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, (PIMS), for the period 1996-2003. He is also the co- editor in chief of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics from 1993-2002. He is the current scientific director of the Banff International Research Station, (BIRS). Ghoussoub was made a fellow of The Royal Society of Canada in 1994 and a fellow of American Mathematical Society in 2012.
