Napoleone Ferrara, born 26 July 1956 in Catania, is an Italian-American molecular biologist. He joined University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center after a career at Genentech in Northern California where he pioneered new treatments for angiogenic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and age-related macular disease (AMD). He discovered VEGF and created the first anti-VEGF antibody, which suppresses the growth of a variety tumors. These discoveries led to the development of bevacizumab (Avastin), the first clinically- available angiogenesis inhibitor. This prevents the growth and formation of blood vessels in solid tumors. It has also become a standard treatment for many types of cancers. Ferrara’s research led to the discovery of ranibizumab, or Lucentis, which is a drug that prevents vision loss in intraocular vessels disorders.
Ferrara received the Antonio Champalimaud Foundation Vision Award in September 2014.
He was awarded the Lasker Award for his 2010 discovery of VEGF. He was awarded the Breakthrough Prize for Life Sciences in Life Sciences of $3 million in 2013. He has been awarded numerous other awards including the General Motors Cancer Research Award (2006) and the ASCO Science of Oncology Award (2007). The Pezcoller Foundation/AACR International Award (2009), Dr. Paul Janssen Award in Biomedical Research (2011) and The Economist’s Innovation Award in bioscience (2012).
