Naoki Hyakuta is one of the most popular and richest Novelist who was born on February 23, 1956 in Higashiyodogawa-ku, Japan. Naoki Hyakuta, also known as Bai Tian Shang Shu, Hyakuta Naoki (born February 23, 1956), is a Japanese novelist, television producer, and filmmaker. His right-wing political views, and his denial of Japanese war crimes during and prior to World War II are what make him famous. His 2006 novel, The Eternal Zero, became a hit in 2013. He also has a controversial tenure as NHK governor and his support for the Nanjing Massacre denial.

As an NHK governor, he stated that it was wrong for him to claim that ethnic Koreans were forced to come to Japan during the Japanese colonial period.

His latest book, a history of Japan published in 2018, was discovered to contain fictitious statements as well as plagiarism from sources such as Wikipedia articles, the latter being admitted by the author himself.

In memory of Yashiki Takajin, a radio and television show host, Hyakuta wrote Jun’ai (2014). As if the book were a piece of reporting, it depicted Takajin’s manager and daughter as cruel, callous individuals who left him in his last days. Takajin’s daughter and manager sued for slander. Hyakuta claimed that all of the people named in the book were real but that the book was fiction. Hyakuta had heavily relied on interviews with Takajin’s widow and didn’t mention Takajin’s bigamy in his book. He only admitted to it later. After several appeals, the Supreme Court of Japan ruled that Hyakuta had mistreated Takajin’s daughter. It ordered 3.65 million yen in compensation. The Tokyo District Court in November 2018 found Hyakuta had also slandered Takajin’s manager, and ordered 2.75 million yen of compensation. They also issued a written apology.

Hyakuta’s novel, “The Eternal Zero”, was published in 2006. With four million copies sold, it became a bestseller. It was also made into a 2013 film. Hayao Miyazaki, the famed Studio Ghibli director, criticized the novel as “a bunch of lies” about war. Hyakuta speculated that Miyazaki was “not right in the head”.

Shinzo Abe selected Hyakuta as one of twelve members of the board governors of Japan’s national broadcaster NHK in 2013. This was after Abe’s re-election as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. Hyukata had supported his attempt to re-assume the leadership of the LDP last year. Hyakuta was selected as NHK governor. There was some criticism. However, the diet approved Hyakuta’s appointment in November 2013. His historical views of denigrating the Nanjing Massacre caused extensive controversy following his speech supporting Toshio Tamogami’s bid to become Tokyo governor in 2014. This brought renewed attention to his rightist views. In 2015, he resigned from his position as governor.

During a speech on March 3, 2014, in support of Toshio Tamogami’s bid for the governorship of Tokyo, Hyakuta stated that the Nanjing Massacre “never happened”, and stated that the Tokyo War Crimes Trials were a “sham” to cover up US war crimes such as firebombing and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He also stated that he didn’t see a need to teach such things to children, as they should be taught what a great country Japan is. He said that claims about the Nanjing Massacre were brought up at the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunals only to cancel out the crimes the US had committed. A press officer at the US embassy in Tokyo described Hyakuta’s views as “preposterous”.
