Yamazaki was born 1978 in Kitakyushu (Japan). Her family moved to Saitama Prefecture shortly after she was born. Yamazaki began writing fiction while a senior at Kokugakuin University. She graduated with a thesis about the character Ukifune from The Tale of Genji. Because she loved Diet Coke, she chose to use the pen name “Nao-Cola”.

Strangers Press published Yamazaki’s first English language book in 2017, a collection of short stories that were translated by Polly Barton. Eluned Gramich, a reviewer for The Japan Society of the UK noted that Yamazaki seemed to be more interested in the distance between lovers then in what unites them. However, she also called Friendship for Grown ups “funny” and “intelligent”. The Japan Times praise Yamazaki’s “skill at evoking contemporary life’s ambiguity” and calls the collection “a small, but important book that tells a lot about our lives today.”

Yamazaki publishes fiction as well as essays on family life. The 2016 collection Kawaii otto, a collection of essays about family life in a non- traditional setting, includes KawaiiFu / Cute Husband, a collection of essays about the challenges faced by a husband and wife living together. Yamazaki began writing essays about her first child, at 37 years old. Haha dewa nukute oya, ni naru was the result of her writings.

Hito no sekkusu O warau Na was later made into the Nami Iguchi 2008 film of the same title, starring Hiromi Nagasaku & Kenichi Matsuyama.
