DeParle was a member of Bass, Berry & Sims, a Nashville law firm. He then served as the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Human Services under Governor Ned McWherter’s cabinet from 1987 to 1989.

She was previously the director of White House Office of Health Reform. This position led the administration’s efforts to address health care issues. From 1997 to 2000 she was the director of Health Care Financing Administration, (HCFA). She managed the Medicare program for Clinton’s administration. Before that, she worked at the Office of Management and Budget.
She graduated from Tennessee and enrolled at Harvard Law School. However, she had to stop her studies when she was granted a Rhodes scholarship. She was a Rhodes scholar and received a B.A. from Balliol College, Oxford University. In 1981, she graduated from Oxford. She returned to Harvard in 1981 and received a J.D. In 1983, she received her J.D.
