Nanao Singh Thokchom is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on January 8, 1991 in Bishnupur, India. Thokchom Nanao Sing (born 8th January 1991) is an Indian boxer who hails from Khoijuman Maning Leikai, a village in Bishnupur’s district of Manipur. He trains at the Pune- based Army Sports Institute, and is supported and coached by Olympic Gold Quest. This foundation supports Indian athletes.
He was seeded second in 48-kg at the 2009 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Nanao Singh lost the second round by one point. This poor result saw him drop three places to eighth place in the light flyweight rankings. Nanao Singh, representing Team Asia, represented Team Asia in the season-ending President’s Cup. This was the only AIBA event.
In January 2010, Nanao Singh injured his hand and this put him out of boxing. Due to this injury, he was unable to participate at the Indian National Championships. In June 2010, he underwent a surgery for his fractured arm.
At the 2010 season-opening Super Cup Boxing, Nanao Singh won the title in the 48-kg category. In the same year, the Asian Boxing Confederation organized an invitational prize event that was called as the Champion of Champions. Along with three other Indian boxers – Vijender Singh, Dinesh Kumar and Akhil Kumar – Nanao Singh represented his country in the two-day championship; he lost in the opening round itself. For the Commonwealth Boxing Championships, Nanao Singh failed to qualify because he had lost out to another boxer in the trials.
Nanao Singh represented India at the 2007 Commonwealth Boxing Championships, Liverpool in the 48-kg division. Despite being a junior player, he won a silver medal in this championship. This performance was the basis for Nanao Singh’s success in the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. He won the Youth Games gold medal as per his coach. Nanao Singh, the Indian Youth Boxing Champion, won the gold medal, the only medalist, at the inaugural AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, which was held in Guadalajara (Mexico). He also won the Juvenile Olympics Games gold medal in 2008, which was held in Cuba. He narrowly missed out on the gold medal in his division at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships 2009. The Indian coach was pleased with the performance of the boxers, and predicted a bright future. With 1400 points, he was now ranked fifth.

Thokchom Nanao was the son of Thokchom Tobobi Sing and Keinahanbi De in Khoijuman Maning Leikai (35 km (22 mi) from Imphal), in Bishnupur, district of Manipur. Since the age of eight, he was interested in boxing. A friend of his, a boxer who took him to a ring for boxing, spurred his interest in the sport. Nanao Singh was further inspired by the achievements of Dingko Singh (a Manipur-based boxer who won the 1998 Asian Games gold medal) and Muhammad Ali. His parents wanted him to be an educated child and not focus on sport because he was the youngest of their children. His father was furious when Nanao Singh put on his first boxing gloves and sent him to a school for boarding so that he could refocus his attention to education. Nanao Singh fled from the school and returned to his home. His father saw his passion for boxing and introduced him to a local coach, who initially trained him. Nanao Singh, a Pune-based Army Sports Institute student, joined them in 2000. He was the result of the joint collaboration between the institute and the Sports Authority of India, whose goal was to win medals internationally for India.
Nanao Singh began boxing in India in 2004 when he won the consecutive sub- junior national championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was the National Junior Champion in 2007 and 2008.
Samsung chose a list of 10 Indian sports-persons as a part of Sports Ratna, a scholarship program with an aim to support players for the 2010 Asian Games. Nanao Singh was one among this list of four boxers, four shooters, and two wrestlers. Olympic Gold Quest, a not-for-profit foundation to identify and support Indian athletes, chose him because of his talent and bright future.
