Benjamin Thomas Watt announced on July 21 that his first promotion in boxing would be held at ABA Stadium on September 24, 2017. Helu took on Ange Davis to win the New Zealand (NZPBA) and UBF Asia Pacific Heavyweight Titles. Ange Davis, making her pro boxing debut, has fought in 10 kickboxing fights (5 wins 4 losses 1 draw), and held the TBANZ Women’s middleweight title. Davis sustained an ankle injury that put the bout in danger. However, doctors have recently confirmed that Davis is medically fit to box. Helu was the favourite to win the fight and would likely be eligible for a world title shot if she continued her winning streak. Although the bout was close throughout, the fight ended in a split decision Win for Helu. There was huge backlash on social media after the bout. Many believed that Davis had won the fight. People started to abuse Helu, the promoter, and the judges. Ange Davis and her team started an appeal with NZPBA on 26 September to address poor judging. NZPBA revealed that the panel had looked at the scorecards and discovered that one judge had incorrectly added up his card. Although they originally scored 58/56 for Helu, the panel discovered that it was actually supposed to have been 57/57, making this a split-decision draw. This error was corrected by the judge and all regulations for NZ title bouts were changed. The bout ended in a draw. Helu was stripped of his two belts and must rematch within 6 months of their fight (expiring on 24 March 2017). Otherwise, they could lose their mandatory positions. This fight was televised by Maori Television on 26 December via Whawhai Fight Night.
Alrie Meleisea was announced in January 2017 that Helu would face him again at ABA Stadium to compete for the vacant NZPBA title and UBF Asia Pacific Heavyweight title. Due to the Helu Vs Ange Davis appeal, planning the bout proved difficult. Davis sustained a severe shoulder injury during training that would force her out of the ring after the expiry date for rematch clause on March 24. Helu and Meleisea were both allowed to fight for vacant titles. The winner will face Davis once she has fully healed. Helu lost the fight by controversial split decision.
