Nadia Valavani is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 16, 1954 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Olga Naadia Valavani, Greek: Olga Natia Balabane; born 16 Aug 1954), is a Greek politician. On 27 January 2015, she was elected to the position of Alternate Minister Finance in the cabinet led by Alexis Tsipras. On 15 July 2015, she resigned from her position as Alternate Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Alexis Tsipras. This was just before the significant vote in the Hellenic parliament on terms for a bailout package.

She was invited to join Syriza in 2007 and organized its activities in Crete. She contested Athens B in 2009 for Syriza. After losing, she dedicated herself to Syriza campaigning, as a canvasser and author of pamphlets.

She had been a Syriza Member of the Hellenic Parliament since May 2012, but defected to Popular Unity in September 2015.

In 1975, she married labour lawyer Dimos Tsaknias, with whom she had two children, a son and a daughter. Tsaknias, like his wife a Syriza (and former Communist) politician, died on 2 November 2014.

Valavani was a translator for an insurance company for twenty years and, from 1996 to 2005, was the director at a hotel in Crete.

Valavani was a student at Iraklio in the Greek military dictatorship. She engaged in anti-regime activities in the guise of the Communist Youth of Greece and Communist Party of Greece, which were outlawed. For this she was held in several facilities, including five months in solitary confinement. After the fall of the dictatorship in July 1974, Valavani was released from Korydallos Prison and returned to her studies. Valavani graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Valavani participated in activities of KKE, KNE and other political organizations during the more open-minded atmosphere after the regime change. This allowed her to travel extensively throughout Europe and the United States. In 1989, she left the KKE because she disagreed with the decision of the KKE to join the unity government of Tzannis Tzannetakis.

Valavani was first elected to the Hellenic Parliament representing Athens B for Syriza in May 2012; she was re-elected in June 2012 and again in the January 2015 election.
