Nabila Mounib Biography

Nabila Mounib is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 14, 1960 in Casablanca, Grand Casablanca, Morocco. Nabila Mounib was born in Casablanca in 1960 and is currently the General Secretary of Unified Socialist Party. She is the first female to be elected as the head of a Moroccan political party.

Mounib was an affiliate of the Socialist Unified Party (under various names) as early as 2000. However, she only began engaging with the media after the Arab Spring protests in 2011. She was elected as the lone candidate to be General Secretary of her party on 16 January 2012. She is now the first Moroccan woman to lead a political party.

She called for a boycott of her political party and the Democratic Left Alliance during the 2011 constitutional referendum, claiming that the constitution is not democratic because it keeps most powers in the hands the sovereign and doesn’t guarantee a true separation of powers.

Mounib is the child of Ahmed Mounib who was a diplomat and served as the Moroccan consul to Oran in the 1970s. She grew up in Algeria, where she graduated from high school in 1977. Khadija Belmekki, her mother, is from Fez. After graduating from Rabat University, she studied briefly in Montpellier, where she received a Ph.D in endocrinology. She was then awarded a teaching job at Ain Chok Casablanca University, where she has taught biology (endocrinology).

She was preparing her doctoral thesis for France in 1985 when she joined the Youth of Democratic Students. After that, she joined the Organization for Freedom of Information and Expression and the Organization of the popular Democratic Action, which became the Unified Socialist Party after merging with other left-leaning formations.

Questioned by the Moroccan magazine TelQuel in November 2012, she said that her short-term project is the unification of the left forces into a progressive democratic federalism. In August 2013, at the outbreak of the Daniel Galván scandal, she was among the first to react by openly criticizing the royal grace and considering that “the decision to grant it (royal grace) to the pedophile Daniel Galvan is unacceptable and should be revoked as soon as possible”. During the political crisis between Morocco and Sweden, following a Swedish bill to recognize the Sahrawi Republic, Nabila Mounib chaired a Moroccan delegation in Stockholm, composed of left-wing parties (PSU, PPS, USFP ..), between 4 and 7 November 2015, with a view to finding a solution to the crisis. In January 2016, Swedish public television SVT announced that the Swedish government had renounced its plan to recognize the independent Sahara.
