Myo Kyawt Myaing Biography

Myo Kyawt Myaing is one of the most popular and richest Songwriter who was born on April 29, 1971 in Yangon, Yangon Region, Myanmar. Myo Kyawt Myaing was a pilot and teacher with Union of Burma Airways. He was born in Yangon on 29 April 1971. He is the youngest of four siblings. He has two older sisters and one elder brother. Myaing is of Mon descent, his father being a British colonial era senior civil service officer and Konbaung period noble. He was raised in the Seven-Mile Junction area and attended the TTC School. In 1987, he enrolled at University of Yangon to study geology. However, a year later, the military government closed all schools in the country following the 8888 Rising.

His music charted its own course in the 2000s. Acid’s debut album Sa Tin Chein (2000) was a success. This marked a shift in the Burmese rap/hip hop scene. Myaing continued to create his own style of dance-themed, remixed, rap- influenced music. This was epitomized by “Thagya min” and “A-Hmat-Ta-Ya Thingyan”, along with slower synthpop songs such as “Hsu Taung Ge Bu De” and “Thissa Shi Gyay”. He declared in 2003 that he wanted to be more than a rapper, with “Rap Thachin Hso Yin”, and rapped in Burmese as well as English. He never abandoned his rap roots and bravado, but that is not to say he did not abandon them. The 2004 album “My Name Is Myo Kyawt Myaing”, reveals that:

His unique brand of music achieved enormous success in Myanmar, culminating in Lu Phyit Ya De Dokkha (2004). Several songs from the album became his standards. His success enabled him to increase production values of his music videos for the Dokkha album.

Myaing has been married twice. He married Thwin Pa-Pa Aung, a physician, on his 39th birthday in 2010 but the marriage ended in divorce less than two months later on 24 June 2010. He married Jan Jann on 1 May 2013. The marriage ended in divorce in 2016.

Myaing, at the height of his popularity in the mid 2000s, was involved in many compilation albums with other artists. His albums with other artists have accounted for the majority of his albums from the late 2000s. He has been a part of at least 34 compilation albums over his career. Since 2009, he has released three major albums. In Da-Ge Ma Chit Phe Ne (2009, he collaborated with Htun Aeindra Bo, a top actress and singer. He released Gaba Gyi APyin- Bet, his first solo album since 2004, in 2012. However, the album contained some of his old hits such as “Rap Thachin Hso Yin”, and “Thissa Shi Gyay”. His most recent album Pyissoppan was released in 2013, featuring Alex and Yan Yan Chan.

Myo Kyawt Myaing, Burmese: miu’keaa’miung; pronounced [mjotco mjain]; born 29 April 1971), is a Burmese record producer, singer and audio engineer. He is credited with introducing rap music to Myanmar and was one of Burmese’s most successful singers in the 1990s. He has released at least 11 albums and 34 compilation albums. His songs are primarily dance, synthpop, and remixed music, despite his moniker as “Godfather Burmese Rap”.

His music career started during this time. Since 1986, he had been writing songs and founded Virus 3 in 1989. He decided to continue his education in music and enrolled at the SAE Institute in Singapore in 1990. He graduated from the school in 1992 with a degree of audio and music production. Later that year, he released his first album Moe Dway Ywa Nay Chein Khana. The album featured Eurodance-influenced songs such as “Einmet Met De” along with more traditional pop songs such “A-Chit Mya Zwa A–Twet”. It also included a remixed version of J Maung Maung’s classic “Kyanaw Ma Kaung Bu”. His 1994 album Virus 3 was his follow-up, with the title track “Rap N Roll”, which was essentially Eurodance-themed rap. Both albums were very well received and had a lasting impact on the local music scene. He was regarded as the “godfather” of Burmese Rap and the person who “introduced Burmese rap to Burmese listeners.”

Despite his notoriety as a rap pioneer, Myaing had always considered himself more than a rapper. His musical sensibilities lay more with remixing Eurodance and American rap hits and with creating more soulful, if heavily synthesized, love songs. His third album 2000 Remix (2000) showcased not only his remixing skills but also his songwriting skills. To be sure, his songwriting, like that of most Burmese pop songwriters of the day, consisted mainly of sampling or covering foreign songs and inserting Burmese lyrics in them. The artists he has sampled/covered range from the likes of Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, NWA to Nirvana to Eurodance acts like Fatboy Slim and Rimini Project. He has also remixed and covered several Burmese hits of previous eras, ranging from older covers of Western songs like Gangawdaw Myo Aung’s “Moe Baw Hma Nay Gyin De” to older original-tune hits like Mar Mar Aye’s “Sinza Ya Ohn Me”.
