On December 6, 2009 Melnychenko accused Volodymyr Lytvyn of ordering the murder of journalist Georgiy Gongadze in 2000. A spokesperson for Lytvyn dismissed the claims as part of the 2010 Ukrainian presidential election campaign.

Oleksandr Moroz, a Ukrainian politician, publicly accused President Kuchma in the murder of Gongadze. He named Melnychenko the source of the information and played selected recordings to journalists. This was the beginning of the ‘Cassette Scandal. Melnychenko fled Ukraine to Ostrava, Czech Republic days earlier. There, he left behind several bags containing CDs and thousands of digital recordings. Melnychenko fled Ukraine with his family, in violation of an official ban on leaving the country.

Mykola Melnychenko was the son of coal miners who moved from the Donbas to the village of Zapadynka in Kiev Oblast (now near Vasylkiv). He graduated from Kiev Military Institute of Control and Signals and was a KGB communications security expert. Melnychenko began his career in the Ukraine’s State Security Administration, formerly the 9th Directorate of the Committee for State Security, (KGB), shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. Later, he joined President Leonid Kutschma’s bodyguard team and held the rank Major at the time. His primary duty was to guard the President’s office from possible eavesdropping.

Melnychenko is alleged to have recorded many conversations in Kuchma’s office between 1998 and 2000 before fleeing with the secretly taped recordings. These recordings were published in 2000, causing a scandal in Ukraine known as the Cassette Scandal. This scandal had a dramatic impact on the country’s foreign and domestic policies. Melnychenko’s main accusations against Kuchma, supposedly confirmed by the recordings, are that he ordered the kidnapping of Georgiy Gongadze and his murder. After one of the records showed that an advanced Ukrainian radar system Kolchuha was being transferred to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, the United States government got involved. The recordings also contain hundreds of other allegations.

In 2004, Volodymyr Tsvil, a Ukrainian businessman and former KGB officer who supposedly assisted Melnychenko in his escape and further accommodation in the West, publicly accused him of not revealing certain details of the case.
