Bakkoury made his first steps into politics in 2007, when he joined the Movement of All Democrats, founded by Fouad Al Himma. This Movement later became the Authenticity and Modernity Party. Bakkoury was elected Secretary General for the Authenticity and Modernity Party on 19 February 2012. He was elected Secretary General of the Authenticity and Modernity Party in 2015 after he represented himself in Mohammedia during the regional and communal elections. His party won 8 of 47 seats.

He was the Caisse de Depot et De Management General Manager from 2001 to June 2009. King Mohammed VI appointed him chairman of the board at the Moroccan Solar Energy Agency on 30 December 2009.
