Mustafa Balbay started his journalistic career as a student reporter at Gazete, a local newspaper. He was then hired by Milliyet, a centre-left newspaper in Izmir. Later, he became a permanent correspondent at Cumhuriyet’s Izmir office. He was appointed chief investigative reporter in Izmir in 1985 by the same newspaper. In 1989, he moved to Ankara as their news director. Balbay was named Cumhuriyet’s Istanbul news director in 1992. He was named the main political correspondent in Ankara to the left-wing Kemalist newspaper Cumhuriyet in 1993. Later, he lectured at Gazi University’s Faculty of Journalism. He was also co-chair of Ankara Ruzgari, a political talk program that aired on Avrasya TV. He continued to write his Cumhuriyet column after his arrest.

As part of the government’s investigation into the Ergenekon plot, which authorities claim was meant to overthrow the current Turkish government by a military coup, Mustafa Balbay has been taken into custody On July 1, 2008, he was taken into custody and brought to Istanbul. He was questioned about his news coverage, his relationships with the military, and other Ergenkon suspects. His house was searched by police, as well as the Ankara Cumhuriyet office. Computers and other documents were confiscated. Balbay was released four days later and taken to Silivri F Type Prison, Istanbul, for his trial. Balbay was transferred to solitary confinement in February 2011. After nine months of detention, he was released to solitary confinement on February 28, 2011. Koksal Sengun (the president of the Court), officially opposed his detention on February 25, 2011. However, the court decided that he should be kept in detention with majority votes. He shared a cell from October 2012 with Tuncay Ozkan, an arrested journalist.

Mustafa Balbay has denied the government’s accusations. In columns written from prison and in court hearings, he has repeatedly said that the seized notes and recorded conversations related to his journalistic activities. Regarding the taped conversations, he said that such discussions were theoretical and constituted no criminal intent. Moreover, he added that notes shown as evidence and allegedly written by him have three different versions in the indictment. He also rejected claims that he has relations within the alleged Ergenekon organization. In a letter he sent to a delegation composed of Gazetecilere Özgürlük Platformu (Freedom for Journalists Platform), RSF, IFJ, EFJ and IPI he said, “if you try to produce a crime from an archive belonging to a journalist, you can declare everyone as guilty”.
