Mustafa A.G. Abushagur is one of the most popular and richest Engineer who was born on February 15, 1951 in Tripoli, Libya. Abushagur was born on the 15th of February 1951 in Tripoli’s Souq Al-Jumuah. His family moved to Gharyan in the western mountains when he was just a few years of age. They remained there for a while before returning to Tripoli’s Souq Al-Jumuah.

Abushagur started his academic career in 1984 as a visiting professor at University of Rochester, New York. In 1985, Abushagur joined the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH), as an assistant professor of computer and electrical engineering (ECE). He was promoted to full professor in 1995. He proposed the idea of starting an undergraduate program in optical engineering while working in the ECE department. He was responsible for developing the curriculum and served as the chairman of the Optical Engineering Committee during his remaining time at the university. This program was the first to be awarded ABET accreditation in American optical engineering. Abushagur was awarded multiple grants and research awards from various federal agencies during his time at UAH. These included NASA, NSF and DoD. Abushagur started two companies while on sabbatical from UAH. Photronix (M) Sdn was the first start-up. Bhd. Malaysian optical fiber component company founded by Abushagur in 1998 using private equity. Abushagur served as the president and CTO from 1998 to 2002 before returning to UAH. He founded LiquidLight which was an optical networking equipment manufacturer. From 2000 to 2001, he was co- founder, CTO, and vice president at LiquidLight.

Abushagur’s key research areas are nanophotonics, plasmonics, photonic microsystems, adaptive signal processing, optical MEMS, optical computing, optical communications, optical interconnects and fiber sensors. He holds three patents, has published ninety-eight research papers, published a book on Fourier optics and has been invited to write five book chapters. As a result of his significant contributions to the field of optics, the field of photonics and for pioneering educational programs, Abushagur was named a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He also won numerous awards such as the Space Act Award from the NASA Inventions and Contributions Board in 2004, served as an editor for several professional journals and cumulatively received approximately thirteen million dollars in research grants and funding.

On 22 November 2011, Abushagur was named the Deputy Prime Minister of Libya. Two days after being named Deputy Prime Minister, he took his oath of allegiance, which stated: “I swear by Almighty God to perform my duties honestly and faithfully, to stay faithful to the objectives of the Seventeenth of February Revolution, to respect the constitutional declaration and bylaws of the Council, to carefully honor the interests of the Libyan people and to safeguard the independence of Libya, its security and its territorial integrity.”

He began his education in Gharyan. He moved to Souq Al-Jumuah schools when he was in the second grade. There he continued his education until he graduated high school. He went on to study at the University of Tripoli, where he received a B.Sc. in electrical engineering. Abushagur moved from California to Pasadena in 1975 to continue his education at Caltech. He earned his M.Sc. during his time at Caltech. He earned his M.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1977, and his Ph.D. degree in 1984.

Mustafa A.G. Abushagur, mSTf.bwshqwr Gyt.bwshqwr; born 15 February 1951, is a Libyan politician and professor of electrical engineering. He also serves as a university president and entrepreneur. From 22 November 2011 to 14 Nov 2012, he was the interim Deputy Prime minister of Libya in Abdurrahim El-Keib’s cabinet. He was briefly elected to succeed El-Keib in 2012 as Prime Minister. However, he failed to get congressional approval for his cabinet nominations and was removed from office.

Abushagur was a strong opponent to the Gaddafi regime in the 1970s. Abushagur worked actively with US regime opponents while at Caltech. Abushagur met many Gaddafi dissidents at Caltech, including Abdurrahim El Keib in 1971. Later, El-Keib became the second interim Prime Minister for Libya during the Libyan Civil War. El-Keib and many other dissidents continued to contact him after he moved to California. Many of them went on to attend universities in California. Their common goal to overthrow Gaddafi strengthened their resolve, as they worked together to end Gaddafi’s rule in Libya for the next three centuries. Abushagur’s final visit to Libya in 1980 was to see his family. Then, his Gaddafi opposition group began to openly oppose Gaddafi’s regime. Abushagur was involved in the formation and leadership of many opposition groups, including the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. He later left the National Front of 1992. In 1981, Gaddafi placed Abushagur on his wanted list for political activities. For the next 32 years, Abushagur and other dissidents lived exiled outside of Libya. The National Front for the Salvation of Libya tried to overthrow the Libyan government in May 1984. Many of the dissidents from Libya who had studied in the United States were executed in this failed attempt. Others were also arrested. Gaddafi televised the executions and interrogated many dissidents on television. Abushagur was mentioned numerous times during the televised interrogations. Abushagur’s confessions led to significant hardships for Abushagur and his family in Libya over the years.

In 2002, Abushagur was the founding director of the Ph.D. Program in Microsystems Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In early 2007, he led the effort to establish a satellite campus in the Middle East and drove the negotiations between RIT and the Emirati government’s Dubai Silicon Oasis in Dubai, UAE. The satellite campus was opened in fall 2008 and Abushagur became the founding president of RIT Dubai.

On the early afternoon of 29 July 2014, Abushagur was kidnapped from his home in Hay al-Andalus by an armed group, who were travelling in several vehicles, including an unmarked ambulance. The group reportedly forced him at gunpoint into the unmarked ambulance, in front of his wife, daughters and another relative. As Abushagur was being driven away with a gun pointed at his head, a relative who was present at his home attempted to follow them in his personal vehicle; however, two other vehicles that were involved in his abduction moved in and blocked the road, preventing him from pursuing.
