Murray Graham Chandler MNZM was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 4, 1960. He is an international chess grandmaster. After obtaining British citizenship in 1980, he has been playing for both New Zealand and England. Chandler is also a chess writer, and occasionally organises chess tournaments.
In 2006, he returned to New Zealand and won his second New Zealand Chess Championship. He also won a third title in 2008. He has now changed his player registration to New Zealand Federation and is eligible to play for his home country.
Amongst Chandler’s best results have been Commonwealth Champion (twice – jointly in 1984 and outright in 1987), first place at Brighton 1981, first place in the Blackpool Zonal of 1990, tie for first place, Lloyds Bank Masters 1979, tie for first place, Hastings Premier 1986/7, and tied for second place (behind Anatoly Karpov), London 1984. He also played for the Rest of World team versus the Soviet Union in 1984 and tied first at the British Chess Championship of 1986, but lost the play-off match for the title.
In the 2017 New Year Honours Chandler was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to chess.
From 1991 to 1999, Chandler was British Chess Magazine’s editor. He also founded Gambit Publications in the late 1990s, which was a publisher of high- quality chess books. It has received positive reviews from all corners. England teammate John Nunn, and FIDE Master-cum author Graham Burgess were also Gambit directors. The company now has a large back catalogue that includes contributions from all three directors as well as from many other chess writers. Modern Chess Strategy by John L. Watson has been highly acclaimed, and Chandler’s How To Beat Your Dad At Chess was a huge seller. Bad Bishop Ltd. produced VHS and DVD material, which included a repertoire against Nc6 Sicilian.

In 1975-76, Chandler won the New Zealand Chess Championship. He also qualified as an International Master by winning the Asian Junior Chess Championship. In 1974, he was the first international chess player to make it to the Asian Team Chess Championships in Penang, Malaysia. He represented New Zealand at the Chess Olympiads in 1976, 1978, and 1980, but he switched to England after that. He represented England in the Chess Olympiads 1982, 1984 and 1986. This was part of a highly successful group that beat the Soviets in crucial encounters. Between 1987 and 1992, he maintained an Elo rating of around 2600 and was eligible for the grandmaster title.
One curiousity is his lifetime record of two wins, zero draws, and no losses against Garry Kasparrov. The first was at the 1976 World Under-16 Championship, while the second was in a simultaneous 1985 display.
In 2013, he purchased the old Saint Paul’s church in Auckland, converting it into a chess coaching centre.
