Batchelor was a member of the Australian Research Quality Framework’s Mathematical and Information Sciences and Technology Assessment Panel (2007).
In 2008 Batchelor was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Chongqing University, China. He took up a full-time position there in 2013 under the 1000 Talents Plan. He is a General Council Member of the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics.
In 2018 he led research into the stones used to build Buckingham Palace, determining that they were made from 200 million year old microbes.
From mid-2005 to mid-2013 Batchelor was the Head of Theoretical Physics. He has held visiting posts at a variety of universities including the University of Oxford and the University of Tokyo. During Michaelmas Term 2013, he held a Visiting Fellowship in All Souls College, Oxford.

Batchelor attended Chatham Public School (Taree in New South Wales) and Chatham High School. Batchelor graduated with 1st-class honours from the University of New South Wales’ Honours Degree in Theoretical Physics in 1983. He also received a University Medal. Batchelor received a PhD degree in Mathematics from the Australian National University.
He was first appointed to a postdoctoral position at the Lorentz Institute, Leiden. After working as a postdoctoral researcher in mathematics at the University of Melbourne, he was offered an Australian Research Council QEII Fellowship to the Australian National University. After receiving two consecutive ARC Senior Research Fellowships in mathematics, he was awarded an ARC Professorial Fellowship.
Batchelor was Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical. Prior to this he served as Mathematical Physics Section Editor (2007–2008) and as a member of the Editorial Board (2005–2006). He is currently Topical Reviews Editor (2014-).
