Rua is a proud veteran of Pride Fighting Championships where he was once regarded as one of the top middleweights in the country. Rua fought regularly at 185 pounds but has also fought at heavyweight and 205 pounds. He was the first ever EliteXC Middleweight Champion. He was also a highly successful mixed martial artist in England, appearing on both Cage Rage cards and BAMMA cards. Although he is Portuguese- and Italian-American, he was born in Brazil.
Rua was originally scheduled to face Phil Baroni on May 31, 2008. However, Rua sustained a minor foot injury. He was forced to fight instead on the June 14, 2008 card. There, he won a dominant KO win over Tony Bonello. Benji Radach defeated Rua on a CBS live broadcast. Radach won the fight by punching Rua in the head. He had previously fallen on his back from a flying knee.
Rua lost to Cesar Gracie product Roy Boughton via unanimous decision on October 23, 2010 (2010-10-23 ) . Boughton missed weight by 5.5 lbs.
Rua beat Jeremy May on July 18, 2010 at Impact Fighting Championships by submission via guillotine choke.

Ninja’s PRIDE debut was against Daijiro Mizuki in September 2001. He won by referee stoppage following repeated kicks, stomps, and kicks. Rua defeated Alex Andrade and Alexander Otsuka after a close loss to Dan Henderson. Rua was due to fight Jorge Navalhada for the Meca Middleweight title (205 lb), but he was injured and couldn’t fight. He defeated Mario Sperry after a long battle of attrition. What happened to Shogun Rua?
Shogun Rua has been out of action since November 2020, a loss to Paul Craig. Following the fight, Dana White revealed that the Brazilian had retired, but that seems to be no more. Shogun Rua announced in the months after his loss to Craig that he was looking at two more bouts, but nothing was made official.
