Mukul Roy Biography

Mukul Roy is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 17, 1954 in Kanchrapara, West Bengal, India. Mukul Roy, a Bharatiya Janata Party member and Indian politician, was born 17 April 1954. He was the 32nd Indian Railway Minister. He was also a former Rajya Sabha member, representing West Bengal for 2 consecutive terms. He was also a Minister of state in the Ministry of Shipping, and then later the Ministry of Railways. He was previously associated with the All India Trinamool Congress, and Indian National Congress.

Roy was elected to Rajya Sabha in April 2006. He also served as the leader of All India Trinamool Congress between 28 May 2009 and 20 March 2012. UPA II was first appointed Minister of state in the Ministry of Shipping, and then became Minister of State at the Ministry of Railways after Mamata Banerjee quit.

After Dinesh resigned, Mukul became the Railway Minister of India and he removed the fare hike introduced by the former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, to much criticism. With the exit of Trinamool from UPA coalition due to an allowance of 51% FDI in retail and aviation sector, Mukul Roy’s tenure of railway minister came to an end in the month of September 2012.

In 2012, he was the subject of a controversy regarding the Railway Budget. This happened after Mamata Banerjee expressed her discontent with the increase in passenger fares, and demanded the resignation of Dinesh Trivedi, Railway Minister.

He received his BSc degree from Calcutta University. In 2006, he also received a MA in public administration degree from Madurai Kamaraj University.

Roy was a founding member of All India Trinamool Congress, which was founded in January 1998 by Mamata Banerjee as a breakaway faction from the Indian National Congress. He was soon the face of the party in New Delhi, and was elected general secretary in 2006.
