Mukhyamantri Chandru is one of the most popular and richest Actor who was born on August 28, 1953 in Karnataka, India. Chandru was involved in Kannada language activities for the public, government, and mass media in the first decade of 21st century. He has also been instrumental in setting up organizations to enhance and encourage the classical language.

Chandru’s film career began in 1983, when he was given a supporting role in Chakravyuha by N. Veeraswamy. He also played an overbearing landlord in Ganeshana Maduve (1990), which was his other notable role.

Chandru joined the Janata Party in 1985 and won the year’s assembly elections from Gauribidanur. Switching to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he became a member of the legislative council in 1998 and 2004. He served as the chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority till 2013 before quitting to join the Indian National Congress in 2014.

Chandru accepted the ticket offered by the ruling Janata Party to contest the assembly elections from Gauribidanur. This followed after actors Anant Nag and Shankar Nag denied. Chandru won the seat by a margin of over 6,600 votes. Speaking about an incident to The Times of India of his stint as the Member of the Legislative Assembly, he said that the officers who assisted him when he “decided to get tough with the sand-mining mafia controlled by a liquor baron in his constituency” were transferred, and when he complained to Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde, he was to told to “get practical”. Following the term, he contested unsuccessfully from the Chikballapur constituency in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections. His party merged with two other parties at the time to become Janata Dal.

Chandru, who was then part of Kalagangotri’s troupe, was selected to play Krishna Dwaipayana Kaushal in 1978. He is the Chief Minister of Udayanchal, a fictional Indian state. After Lohithaswa, who was supposed to take the role, became ill, the role was given to Chandru. The play, Mukhyamantri (Chief Minister in Kannada), is an adaptation from a 1976 book by Ranjit Kapoor. The Chief Minister’s role in the play is abbreviated to KD Kaushal (or KeDi), a term that was used to describe a delinquent. Chandru “incorporated his own dialogues while acting, eventually making the serious drama a comedy.” The play was a huge success and Chandru received the nickname ‘Mukhyamantri’. The play had been shown 700 times across India and beyond by January 2020.

Chandru was born 28 August 1953 to a family consisting of farmers Narasimhaiah in Honnasandra and Thimmamma, a village located in the taluk Nelamangala, Bangalore Rural district in the Indian State, Mysore (now known as Karnataka). After completing his schooling at Siddaganga Matha, Tumkur, he obtained his bachelor’s in science degree from Government Arts and Science College, Bangalore in 1974. After being a frequent viewer of plays at Ravindra Kalakshetra, he found theatre appealing. Later, he worked as a clerk at Bangalore University while also acting in plays.

He has appeared in more than 500 films since his 1983 debut.

Chandru married actress Padma in June 1983. They appeared as a couple in the Oohh Lalaa and the latter played Chief Minister in the 2000s soap opera Maneyondu Mooru Bagilu. They have two sons together, Bharath and Sharath. Recognizing his contribution to Kannada theatre and activism in promoting and safeguarding Kannada-language, Chandru was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Gulbarga University.
