Muhterem Araus, a German politician from the Alliance ’90/The Greens was born in Elmaagac, Turkey on 2 January 1966. Since May 2011, she has been a member of the Landtag of Baden-Wurttemberg constituency Stuttgart I and Landtagsprasidentin (speaker), since May 2016.

She won the Erstmandat (“first mandate”) for Stuttgart I with 42.5% of all votes in the Baden-Wurttemberg State Election 2011. Aras was the first Muslim woman to be admitted to the Baden-Wurttemberg Landtag in 2011. She was a member of both the Committees on Finance and Economic Affairs and of Culture, Youth and Sports and the fiscal policy of Green Party Group.

On 11 May 2016, Aras was elected as the new Baden-Württemberg Landtag president with the votes of 96 MPs, becoming the first member of the Greens, the first Muslim, and the first woman, to hold the position.

Her political career began when she joined the Green Party in 1992. She was elected to the Stuttgart local council in 1999. She was the parliamentary leader for her party in this council from 2007 to 2011.
