Muharem Serbezovski is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on May 2, 1950 in Skopje, Republic of North Macedonia. Muharem Serbezovski, a Romani settlement in Topaana that was once the capital of the People’s Republic of Macedonia, was born May 2, 1950. His 11-member family belonged to the local Romani minority. His father, an imam, gave him a deep interest in Islam and its culture. His parents were poor and he had to learn to sing at an early age in order to make money.
Serbezovski, along with most local Romani artists, left Skopje in 1969. First, he followed Esma and Stevo to Belgrade at the time Yugoslavia’s capital and cultural center. He moved to Sarajevo, a smaller city in 1975, and has lived there since. Bosnia’s capital was experiencing a rich cultural scene at the time and the singer was drawn to its Eastern and cosmopolitan atmosphere. This decision could have been made to distinguish himself from Esma redzepova. Her style was influenced by popular music and Indian Romani heritage. Serbezovski wished to create music that is closer to Turkish or Arabic cultures.
Besides his artistic connection to Stevo Teodosievski and Esma Redžepova, Muharem Serbezovski has also worked with other Yugoslav pop-folk artists, including his own brother, Ajnur Serbezovski, with whom he released a single in 1976 and an album in 1982. He also worked with his favourite musician, the late Toma Zdravković, with whom he toured for 7–8 years, and with Sinan Sakić.
Muharem Serbezovski defines himself as one of the few Romani intellectuals. He is responsible for the first Romani translation of the Qur’an and is himself an author, having penned several novels and poems. He started his career as a writer and translator in the 1980s when he continued the work of his father, who had started to translate the Qur’an into Romani. Serbezovski also has plans to translate the Old and New Testament, Hadiths and some well-known literary works (War and Peace, Crime and Punishment and One Hundred Years of Solitude) into Romani.
At 12 in 1962, Muharem Serbezovski issued his first single Kalajdiljar Kalaj Japar. It featured songs in Turkish. His fame rose in the 1960s thanks to Stevo Teodosievski (folk composer and director of a Romani group) and Esma Redzepova (a Roma singer herself). They also supported other Roma artists. After the release of his second single, Serbezovski saw wide success at 18 years old. The album included Dzemile (in Serbo-Croatian) and Gili e halisake (in Romani). The two tracks also feature Medo Cun, a clarinettist who is a friend of the Teodosievskis. These tracks also showcase the ornate style of singing and the Turkish influence that have characterized the singer throughout his career.

Muharem Srebezovski was a singer who emerged in the 1960s. His first album was released at just 12. He was a popular Romani singer in Yugoslavia, and enjoyed wide popularity in the 1970s as well as the 1980s. He has 12 albums, 22 singles, and extended plays. At that time, Yugoslavia and India were both part of the Non-Aligned Movement and Josip Broz Tito exploited the Indian origin of the Romani people to get the two countries closer. Indian cinema in particular was very popular among Yugoslav Romas. Several of Serbezovski’s songs show such an influence, primarily Ramu, Ramu and Ramajana, both released in 1974. The first one makes reference to a character of the eponymous Indian film, the latter refers to a Hindu epic poem, Ramayana. Muharem Serbezovski went to India in 1978 to attend the Roma festival in Chandigarh. On this occasion, he met the prime minister Indira Gandhi and posed with her son Rajiv Gandhi dressed in the same Indian costume to highlight the resemblance between Indian and Roma peoples.
