Mu’azu Babangida was born in Minna, Niger State, on November 12, 1955. He graduated from the College of Arts & Arabic Studies, Sokoto in 1974. He received the Nigeria Certificate in Education in 1977 from the College of Education in Sokoto. He completed the one-year National Youth Service and became a teacher at Minna’s Government Teachers College in 1978. He later went to Bayero University in Kano, where he earned a BA degree in Education in 1983. In 1985, he went to University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, United States, where he earned a PhD in Public Policy and Strategic Studies.
Babangida Aliyu stated that the Northern region’s traditional rulers were corrupt and support corruption at a symposium held in December 2008. He also said that they have lost the moral authority and respect to correct their subjects. Aliyu stated that more than 90 percent of Nigerian politicians are criminals and spend huge sums to get elected.
Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu is a senior civil servant who was elected governor of Niger State, Nigeria in April 2007. He was reelected on 26 April 2011.
In the March 2015 presidential and senate elections, Gov Aliyu failed in his senate race against David Umaru of the All Progressives Congress, who obtained 149,443 as against 46,459 votes for the governor. On April 11, 2015, he failed to win in his own polling unit in governorship and state assembly elections in polling unit 006 where Aliyu’s PDP only obtained 100 votes against 361 votes for Kofar Danjuma Mainadi of the APC.
Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party platform, was elected governor in Niger State in April 2007. Jibrin Balaguna Alhassan (a rival candidate for PDP nomination) challenged his election, but it was rejected by Abuja’s Federal High Court in December 2007.

He was elected to the National House of Representatives in Chanchaga Federal Constituency in 1983, just before the end of the Second Nigerian Republic. The etsu Nupe, chairman of the Niger state council traditional rulers gave him the title of “sodangin nope”.
In May 1990, he was appointed Acting Chief Political Affairs Officer to the Federal Public Service. He held various posts at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation as well as the National Council on Inter- Governmental Relations. He was the Director of Maritime Services at the Ministry of Transportation from 1996 to 1999. He was elected Federal Permanent Secretary in 1999 and Chief Operating/Accounting officer in 1999. Later, he held several senior positions in various Federal civil service departments before reentering politics in 2007.
