Kwelagobe gave testimony on the socioeconomic effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa. She also proposed a bill that would establish a World Bank AIDS prevention trust funds.
In 2001, Kwelagobe received the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC). In 2003, she was selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow (GLT) by the World Economic Forum, and in 2006, she was selected by the same organisation as a Young Global Leader (YGL).
Kwelagobe married Indian-American financial consultant Abhijoy Gandhi in 2015, in four separate ceremonies held in Kanye Village, Botswana, New York City, and India. They reside in New York City. Kwelagobe is a Christian.
Kwelagobe, who was crowned Miss Universe Botswana 1999 two years later, returned to pageantry, becoming the first holder of this title. Kwelagobe was the first Botswana woman to compete in Miss Universe 1999 in Chaguaramas (Trinidad and Tobago). Kwelagobe rose to the top ten and then the top five and was eventually declared the winner. She beat Miriam Quiambao, a Filipina, and Diana Nogueira, a Spaniar. Kwelagobe was the fourth black woman to be crowned Miss Universe. She is also the first African woman to win one of the Big Four international beauty pageants and the first Botswana woman to win an international major title.
