Moshe Ya'alon is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 24, 1950 in Kiryat Haim, Israel. Ya’alon was Moshe Smilansky’s son, and Batya Silver’s daughter. His father was a factory worker who had moved to Mandatory Palestine in 1925 with his parents from Ukraine. He was also a veteran of both the Haganah (Jewish Brigade) and the Haganah. His mother, a Holocaust survivor, had fought with partisans against the Nazis during World War II. She arrived in Palestine in 1946. Ya’alon was born in Kiryat Haim (a suburb of Haifa for the working class). He was an active member of the Labor Zionist youth movement HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed and joined Ya’alon Nahal group, which he later adopted. Later, he moved to kibbutz Grfit in the Arava region close to Eilat. He was conscripted to the Israel Defense Forces in 1968 and volunteered to be a paratrooper with the Paratroopers Brigade. He was a soldier, a leader of the Brigade’s 50-battalion squad and served in the War of Attrition. In 1971, he was discharged.
Ya’alon went on a sabbatical in the United Kingdom to attend the Camberley Staff College of the British Army. After his return to Israel, Ya’alon was promoted to Colonel and made commander of Sayeret Matkal. Ya’alon was a leader of the unit, which achieved many noteworthy achievements for which it received four honorable mentions. Ya’alon left his post as commander to study at the University of Haifa. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and an Armored Corps certificate. Ya’alon was commissioned commander of Paratroopers Brigade in 1990. Two years later, he became commander of Judea and Samaria Division. Ya’alon shot and killed a Yamam operative trying to arrest a militant belonging to the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine on 10/12/92. He was made commander of an IDF training facility and commander of an armoured division in 1993. Ya’alon was elevated to Major General in 1995 and made head of Military Intelligence. He was made the commanding officer of Israel’s Central Command in 1998. He was in that position when the Second Intifada began in September 2000.
Ya’alon was appointed Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on 9 July 2002, and served in that position until 1 June 2005. The major focus throughout his tenure as Chief of Staff was the army’s effort to quell the Second Intifada. Under his watch, the IDF conducted Operation Defensive Shield.
In December 2005, relatives of the victims of the 1996 shelling of Qana filed a suit against Ya’alon in Washington, D.C., for his alleged role in their deaths. In late 2006, while Ya’alon was in New Zealand on a private fund- raising trip for the Jewish National Fund, Auckland District Court judge Avinash Deobhakta issued a warrant for his arrest for alleged war crimes arising from his role in the 2002 assassination of Hamas commander Salah Shehade, who was killed in a targeted assassination, when an Israeli warplane bombed his home in Gaza City. About 14 Palestinian civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Deobhakta stated that New Zealand had an obligation to prosecute him under the Geneva Convention. Attorney-General Michael Cullen ordered a stay in the warrant after advice from the Crown Law office that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute, and the warrant was cancelled after Ya’alon left New Zealand.
Ya’alon was a commander in the Sayeret Matkal commando force during the 1982 Lebanon War. Ya’alon then joined the Paratroopers Brigade, and was named commander of the 890 Efe (Echis), paratroop battalion. During that time, he sustained a leg injury while leading a pursuit in Lebanon of Hezbollah fighters.
