Moshe Gafni, Hebrew: moSHeh gafniy – born 5 May 1952 in Israel) is an Israeli politician. He is also a Member of the Knesset representing the Ashkenazi Haredi Party United Torah Judaism.

Gafni was criticized by Netanyahu and other leaders of the Israeli government for disparaging Reform and Conservative Judaism in February 2016. Following a decision to expand an egalitarian section to the Western Wall, Gafni declared that he would not recognize it and that Reform Jews were “a bunch of clowns who stab at the Holy Torah”.

Gafni strongly opposed the Supreme Court’s ruling that gay marriages performed abroad must be recognized by the state. He stated: “We don’t have a Jewish State here. Here, we have Sodom and Gomorrah. He was however one of few ultra- Orthodox public figures who condemned the violence perpetrated by members of his community in relation to plans for the 2006 Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade.

In 1988, he was elected first to the Knesset via Degel HaTorah’s ballot. He was also appointed Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs in Yitzhak Shari’s government in 1990. Agudat Yisrael joined the party in forming an alliance called United Torah Judaism for the 1992 elections. This alliance won four seats. Gafni was initially denied a seat but was allowed to enter the Knesset as part of a rotating agreement between the two factions in 1994. After the 1996 elections, a similar arrangement was in place. Gafni took the seat for the first half (i.e., from 1998).

Gafni was able to reappear in the Knesset earlier than expected because of early elections in 1999. He was elected to a full term in 2003 and 2006, as there was no rotation agreement. Gafni was elected the party’s Parliamentary Group Chair after Degel HaTorah separated from Agudat Yoisrael in the final stages of the 16th Knesset.

In the 18th Knesset, Gafni was the chairman of the Knesset’s financial committee.
