Moses Tanui, a Kenyan long-distance runner, was born 20 August 1965 in Marakwet District. He won the gold medal for over 10,000 meters at the 1991 World Championships of Athletics in Tokyo.

In 2004, he was still active when he participated in the Seoul International Marathon. A knee injury later forced him to retire. He still runs a Kaptagat training camp [1].

Tanui was instrumental in helping Khalid Khannouchi set a new world record at the Chicago Marathon 1999. He eventually finished 2nd in 2:06,16. This was a Kenyan record and was the third-fastest marathon in history.
