The Angels drafted Nettles in the second round in 1970 Major League Baseball Draft. He was from Venice High School in Los Angeles. He was a speedy runner and had good range in the outfield. At the end of May, he was demoted to the triple-A Salt Lake City Angels with a.222 average, three additional base hits and one stolen base.
Nettles was given the job of centerfielder heading into 1975, but he lost it to Mickey Rivers one month into the season. Nettles was a corner outfield player and sometimes filled in for Rivers in the center. He scored fifty runs and batting.231 He stole 22 bases but was caught 15 times. On December 11, 1975, he and Jim Spencer were traded by the Chicago White Sox to Bill Melton and Steve Dunning.
