Hohlmeier was the Bavarian State Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs under Minister-President Edmund Stoiber between 1998 and 2005. She resigned from her office in 2005 amid allegations that she had allowed party votes to be falsified, and she had been able to get jobs for friends. Siegfried Schneider replaced her. Hohlmeier, the head of the Christian Social Union’s Munich branch, had resigned in 2004 after she threatened party critics with unspecified revelations regarding their personal lives. She was a member of the Committee on Budget and Finance in the state parliament from 2006 to 2008.
Hohlmeier was a CSU delegates to the Federal Convention in May 2004 for the purpose of electing Germany’s President.
In previous terms, Hohlmeier was a member of the Special Committee on Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering (2012-2013) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (2014-2019). On the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, she served as the EPP group’s spokesperson from 2014 until 2019. In 2012, she also served as rapporteur on the Directive on Attacks against Information Systems.
