Buffini is also an accomplished screenwriter. Stephen Frears directed her 2010 film adaptation of Posy Simmons’ “Tamara Drewe”. Her adaptation of Jane Eyre was made for BBC Films and Ruby Films in 2011. The script appeared on the 2008 Brit List, a film-industry-compiled list of the best unproduced screenplays in British film. It was voted second by nine people. Buffini wrote A Vampire Story, an adaptation of her play for Neil Jordan’s screenplay in Byzantium. It was released in 2013.

On the 21 January 2015, it was announced that Manchester International Festival would premier wonder.land, a new musical with music by Damon Albarn, book and lyrics by Moira Buffini and direction from Rufus Norris. wonder.land is inspired by Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and is a co-production with The National Theatre.

Buffini wrote Dying For It in 2007 for the Almeida. It was a free adaptation from Nikolai Erdman’s classic, The Suicide. It was followed by Marianne Dreams, a dance performance with Will Tuckett based on Catherine Storr’s book. A Vampire Story, her play for young people was part of NT Connections 2008. In 1996, she was a writer’s attachment at the Royal National Theatre Studio.
