Alkali was born in Gumel, Gumel local government region of Jigawa state on 17 January 1950. Before he started his private business, he was an Agricultural Instructor at the Northern Nigeria Ministry of Agriculture (Kano Province). He was a former employee of Messrs Umaru Na’Abba & Sons Limited and became the Chairman and Managing Director at Amasons International Limited. He also served on the boards of Jos Steel Rolling Company, and Gumel Emirate Foundation. Alkali was awarded the Sarduana de Gumel title.
Alkali, a PDP candidate for the governorship of Jigawa State, was sponsored by Sule Lamido, then Minister for Foreign Affairs. Violent protests erupted after Lamido ignored the recommendations of a PDP screening panel. Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, of the All Nigeria People’s Party(ANPP), defeated him. Alkali claimed the ANPP rigged the election, and he said he would contest the results until “justice” is done. Alhaji Hamman A. Tukur appointed him as a Federal Commissioner and the Deputy Chief Whip of the presidency’s Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission. This post he held until May 2010 when his five-year tenure ended.

After Alkali had declared his intention to run for Jigawa Governor in 2011, the Gumel Emirate Council stripped him of the title “Sarduana Gumel”. Lamido may have pushed him to this decision. Alkali did not specify which platform he would run for, but a spokesperson for the Jigawa State Chapter of the PDP stated that they would not endorse Alkali.

Born 17 January 1950, Senator Mohammed D. Alkali was elected Senator for Jigawa North West in Jigawa State, Nigeria, at the beginning of the Nigerian Fourth Republic. He ran on the People’s Democratic Party platform. From 29 May 1999 to May 2003, he was his seat.

He was also appointed to the committees on Aviation and Police Affairs, Transport (vice chairman), Tourism & Culture, Local & Foreign Debts, and Tourism & Culture.
