- He is a Yemeni politician and former President of Revolutionary Committee (or Revolutionary Council), a body that was created by Houthi militants. He was one the military commanders that led the group’s seizing of Yemen’s capital Sana’a in Sept 2014. After the Houthi overthrow of the Yemeni government, he became the de facto leader in Yemen. He is the cousin of Abdul- Malik Badreddin al-Houthi’s leader.
Al-Houthi addressed a Revolutionary Committee meeting on 21 March 2015. He stated that Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi had resigned legally and that his term of office was over. Al-Houthi criticized foreign governments for continuing support for Hadi and accused them of “blatant interference in Yemeni affairs”.
According to the 6 February 2015 statement by a Houthi representative, the Revolutionary Committee is in charge of governing Yemen and forming a new parliament, which will then appoint a five-member presidential council. However, other reports indicated the committee itself would serve as the presidential council.
On 15 August 2016, the Supreme Revolutionary Committee handed power to the Supreme Political Council.
According to Al Jazeera, Al-Houthi sustained injuries from a Royal Saudi Air Force strike on Sana’a in the first night of a Saudi Arabian military intervention in Yemen. This was reported by Al Jazeera.
