Al-Rukn was a lawyer who defended members affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Islah. He was co-defense counsel to two activists known as the UAE 5 who were held for seven months for defamation. They were accused of posting comments on an online forum that criticised the UAE’s leaders. Al-Rukn has been barred from teaching at Al Ain University for his views against the UAE government.
