In 2014, Surani exhibited a work in progress, عملية Operación Opération Operation 行动 Операция. This inventory poem collects together the names of military operations by UN-member countries from the founding of the United Nations to the present.

Surani was awarded a Chalmers Arts Fellowship in 2008 to travel to his ancestral home of India and East Africa. Surani’s trip to India and East Africa saw him write “Kilimanjaro Journal” as well as the poem “Are the Rivers in Your Poems Real,” for which he won the Antigonish Review Great Blue Heron Poetry Prize in 2010. The jury citation for the award states that Surani’s poem “dramatizes tension between the worlds of collective myth and poetic imagination on one hand, and individual experience and empirical decisions on the other.”

Poems taken from Surani’s first collection, Reticent Bodies began to appear in 2001 when Todd Swift, a Canadian poet, published the anthology 100 Poets Against the War. As part of this critique on the Iraq War, Surani’s “Realpolitik” was first published under the pseudonym of “d.m.” In 2001, Surani won the Kingston Literary Award. His short story, “In Times of Drought”, depicts the journey of two brothers who travel from Afghanistan to Iran. Surani was also awarded Queen’s University’s most prestigious writing prize, The Helen Richards Campbell Memorial Scholarship to excellence in creative writing. His poetry was published both in Canada and overseas from 2002 to 2008. The Dublin Quarterly chose his poem “Alley Dolle”, citing its “movement” and “music,” as their 2005 poem-of-the year. His poem “Chopping Wood On Ivan’s Farm” won third place in Arc Poetry Magazine’s 2008 Poem of the Year contest.
