Mladen Bestvina is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on December 1, 1959 in Osijek, Osijek-Baranja, Croatia. Mladen Bestvina, a Croatian-American mathematician who was born in 1959, works in the area geometric group theory. He is an Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Mathematics.

A 1992 paper by Bestvina and Feighn presented a Combination Theorem to explain word-hyperbolic group. This theorem creates sufficient conditions to allow amalgamated products and HNN extension of word-hyperbolic group to be word- hyperbolic again. The Bestvina-Feighn Combination Theorem was a well-known tool in geometric group theory. It has been used for many purposes and has also been generalized (e.g. ).

Bestvina gave an invited address at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002. He also gave a Unni Namboodiri Lecture in Geometry and Topology at the University of Chicago.

In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

Handel and Bestvina introduced the concept of a train map to represent elements of Out (Fn) in a 1992 paper. They introduced the concept of a relative track and used train track methods to solve Scott’s conjecture. This implies that every automorphism of a finitely generated group Fn has a fixed subgroup. Brinkmann’s theorem states that an automorphism is a Fn mapping torus group is word-hyperbolic only if a does not have periodic conjugacy classes. Bridson, Groves and others also prove that the conjugacy problem is algorithmic solveable for free-by-cyclic group.

Mladen Bestvina has been a medalist in three different categories at the International Mathematical Olympiad. He won two silver medals in 1976, 1978, and a bronze in 1977. He holds a B. Sc. In 1982, he received a B. Sc. John Walsh directed him to a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee in 1984. In 1987-88, he was a visiting scholar at Institute for Advanced Study and in 1990-91. Bestvina was a UCLA faculty member and joined the University of Utah faculty in 1993. In 2008, he was named a University of Utah Distinguished Professor. In 1988-89, Bestvina was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship and in 1988-91, the Presidential Young Investigator Award.

An abstract topological description of universal Menger compa was presented in a 1988 Bestvina monograph. Prior to that, only cases of dimensions 0 and 1 were well understood. John Walsh reviewed Bestvina’s monograph and wrote: “This work, which was the author’s Ph.D. thesis from the University of Tennessee represents a monumental leap forward. It has moved the status of topological structure of higher-dimensional Menger compa from one of “close enough to total ignorance” into one of “complete understanding.”

In a 1997 paper Bestvina and Brady developed a version of discrete Morse theory for cubical complexes and applied it to study homological finiteness properties of subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. In particular, they constructed an example of a group which provides a counter-example to either the Whitehead asphericity conjecture or to the Eilenberg−Ganea conjecture, thus showing that at least one of these conjectures must be false. Brady subsequently used their Morse theory technique to construct the first example of a finitely presented subgroup of a word-hyperbolic group that is not itself word-hyperbolic.
